"gemini rue" is a game created by only one person and it's a blast! i had no time to finish the game yet because there was so much distraction in 2011 (told ya), but i will! i started working on that fan art piece months ago, beginning with just the idea to do a "hd version" for one of the main character portraits. then i started to expand the image, ending up with a complete hd version of a scene of the game (see the first image above for the original source). if you have a passion for noir style science fiction, stuff like blade runner, conspiracies, atmospheric music, old school graphics and especially point and click adventures from the past, go for it - seriously! i hope you like it (at least) as much as i do.

naughty little lillits! welcome to another "late 2011 update", slowly but surely nearing the end with those. actually i am pretty glad how this character eventually turned out. if you remember the concepts i posted earlier (this, this or this), here's how those critters look in 3d. i also did a lot of texture testing here, the 2 final retopo-meshs have clean uv maps, diffuse-, displacement- and normal-maps. looks badass in-game. i'll share in-game shots and more renders when the time is right...

the owl underneath is a super heavy ultra wip sculpt of another concept i did, but i kinda liked that state. hope you do as well.

my second z-brush sculpt "the head" was done by starting with a simple sphere inside z-brush. it was sort of a "from time to time" project... i learned many working steps and routines while i was freestyling - that's why his appearance changed so often i guess... learning. all the pores, veins, sinews, folds and scars are manually sculpted with selfmade brushes (no texture used, except for the eyes and the last two images). these are untouched rendershots, i just changed the overall colour and the contrasts here and there manually in ps (even eye reflections are real, the eye was build in zbrush too, it's a solid textured ball inside another translucent, reflecting ball). hope you like him.

yeah z-brush is awesome... this is my first sculpt (finally, i know) using one of the best programs ever created. many thanks goes out to ansgar/erdgeist who helped me out on this. because i am still very new to all that 3d polymesh, retopo stuff he provided help and information on the task and together we actually managed to finish a prop model. it's a totem modelled after a concept i did a while ago. ta-da, hope you like it.

some of my works created in 2011, i had to cut the images here and there because of trademarks and slogans and so forth... it's a mix of a bit of everything, from posters to animation stuff to storyboards to simple advertisements to cute caricatures.
regarding the first, orange "viturn" image: it's a keyframe for an animated advertisement spot. i did all the illustrations (keyframes and inbetweens), backgrounds - even the typography is handwritten by me. the animation itself was done by some cool dudes from berlin. good job! you can watch the finished "viturn" clip if you click here or if you click on the orange triangle in the right corner of the viturn-webpage. the three mashup images containing happy old folks display some of the illustrations i did for another animation clip, i'll link the finished piece once it's released - hope you like 'em.

long time no see, my dear reader - i've had to go through many different experiences in 2011, deep hits but also great new chances i took... such as working abroad or learning new techniques and programs. all that made me forget about keeping these digitally pages up-to-date, sorray. so here's a long overdue update splitted in different postings. hopefully i am done before 2012 starts with a big bang, again! enjoy.

duke nukem forever fan art: in-game-doodle

i never dreamed that one day, i would be able to draw duke nukem inside a duke nukem game. now i finally can, hail to the king!
duke comes, one of the greatest heroes of game history (for) ever...finally done. thanks to gearbox software, tryptich games, 2k games and of course 3d realms - the game "duke nukem forever" is almost out there.
this is some duke nukem forever fan art "in-game-doodle" i did yesterday, photographed straight from the "first access demo". took me 2 1/2 hours - there's no option to save in-game and i don't have any recording tools installed to upload real videos... so here is the final result and a small "wip animation", hope you like. ;)

btw: my retailer wrote me today that all the preorder "first access codes" are out of stock and that i am too late, unfortunately - well, many thanks goes out to the forum member "Uncle Graves"! he's the one who posted an unused "first access code" yesterday on the official forums and i got there just in time because i googled for "free duke first access codes".

because many people liked the sketchversion of that old photography depicting the young couple of cave johnson and caroline i decided to enhance it, so that it is detailed enough to be a stand-alone-fanart on it's own (i already posted the rough sketch and the picture was slightly visible in the fanart piece called "i don't want this!").
this old new fanart is called "she is a gem.", which is another quote from in-game. this time from cave johnson, describing his assistant caroline. hope you like this old leftover out of the aperture lab's. :)

portal 2 fanart: third time = the charm.

did another "portal 2" fanart, yes - without any portals, cubes, chells, wheatleys or cakes... this one is called "I DON'T WANT THIS!" and it's based on a short soundfile which is not even used ingame. i found it by a fluke while listening to some of the awesome sound recordings of the game (portal 2 sound page link above).
[SPOILER] on the image you see sir cave johnson (founder and owner of aperture science labs) and his better half caroline. cave holds some documents in his hands which involve her - but after hearing what his new plans are all about (glaDOS), he suddenly stops talking due to a slap in his face... she knows he's not the type of guy who accepts a "NO!". such a strong character duo and a scene which i had to draw. hope you like :)

details: they are standing in the exact room where the hidden couple oil painting hangs in-game and to underline that i added a fictional old photography of the young love on the right - so there's cave & caroline 2 times in this picture: sad and angry and happy and full of joy. ;)

i finished "portal 2" a few days ago and i love it! outstanding story, gameplay, music, art design, animations, humor, twists... did i mention the humor already? this one is called "home".
[SPOILER] after glados released chell at the end of the game, a simple thought struck me: what if it's not the real "outside world", but rather just another room inside the laboratories... that's why glados had that evil laugh... naah, scratch that! chell loves caro... i mean glados, it's family for her. that's why she visit the lab's from time to time. good old times. how could chell be happy without testing?! you monster!

back with "portal 2" fanart called "auxiliary power". valve went crazy with these marketing moves - totally sick and outstanding! that ongoing arg (alternate reality game) and the "potatoe sack" (13 hit indie games on the cheap) deal to help release portal 2 faster, all those ongoing speculations what'll be next - the whole community is hyped. google it if you are not already part of it. ;)
that girl on the picture is chell. she is dreaming of portals, test chambers and of course cake but angry glaDOS in the back wants MOA POTATOES. every gamer out there who loves portal knows what that picture is all about. can't wait to beat glaDOS (again).

flatlanders animated

i have finally finished my first flash animation. it was a project for the university called "computer animation", the goal was to accomplish interactivity within the animation - so i thought the "flatlanders" comic-pages i created a year or so ago would be perfectly suited for this task. i tried to get some sort of oldschool point&click adventure flavor to it, to trigger stuff like emotions of the main character, new scenes or animations. it was hard to get into AS3 coding and the whole flash interface at first and when i finally got the hang of it i realized how quickly the deadline was closing in... however so much more ideas and stuff to add rushed through my head, but unfortunately i had to make a clean cut in the end. there was enough time to finish some sort of ingame menu and almost the first 2 pages.
anyway, above are some photos from the finished case, a wip mashup and the cover. you can watch the finished animation here.

ps: i try to make the close and fullscreen button work for browser windows, right now it only works if you start the swf file via flash player not in any browser, dunno why. (me = flashnoob)

another "roadside picnic" fanart, let me introduce you to: monkey, red's daughter. since stalkers were often exposed to the influences of the zone and alien artifacts, their children suffer from mutations. maria (monkey) was born with extreme hair growth and completely dark eyes. this is her at the age of about 5, having fun on the swing red built for her. later on in the book none of her skin is visible anymore, she stops talking and behaves like an animal. poor child... :(

btw: there are two balloons depicted on the button, at one point in the novel she plays with them.

the first three sketches represent what i call a "surreal pull-through".
feels just like a (bad) dream pulling you in, but could be even worse.
the last picture shows the "pain owl". white owls often carry great weight in spiritual meaning, for instance it stands for many good things in old myths if you see them by daylight: a new period in life, fortune et cetera. this poor animal was tortured and arranged - far away from any light, hidden deep under the surface... what that means? oh, c'mon.

there we go again - told ya, everything is back to normal now. the picture above was a job for a good friend of my dad (or should i say for his new "toy": the "Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer 712 San"). his greatest wish for the print was a standing capricorn, a mountain and the full moon above it's center - there's so much free, unused space (especially on the right side), because there'll be a window and a few side scuttles (i gonna upload photos, when the image is attached to it, promise).

had the chance to sit in one of these awesome machines this holidays and damn, this is was fun! snow, deep mud, ice, plant, ditch, hill: not a problem for this machine. you have to google these adult toys, if you don't know them.

did you know? the third image from above shows a section of the original size of the image, which was one of the biggest i ever worked on digitally : width 150 cm (~5670 pixels), height 70 cm (~2645 pixels), 300 dpi. opening, loading and saving was fun. -.-

i recently watched one of my all time favorites, carpenter's old classic "they live" from 88. the second half of the movie is pure hollywood nonsense but the whole subject which is based on the shortstory "eight o'clock in the morning" by ray nelson is really timeless and outstanding in my eyes. was fun to do this fanart, hope you like it.

overworked the old orphanage concept for "Visage". the original piece was posted around a month ago. heavy rain folks, heavy rain.

i also finished some 50's related advertising mainly for "Visage", but also as an additional lesson. it is a great experience to draw these happy people like the old masters did back in the days - smile. these are all posters and billboards that will appear in hovgård later presenting fictional brands and as you can see and read: they are not that bloody serious - (other things will be. for sure) but they are based on real "old ads crimes". most likely they are going to be in swedish language in-game (you will get the message anyway)...

i am back with one of the greatest characters ever created... say hello to special agent dale cooper from "twin peaks". i just found out about this timeless tv-show by a fluke. the developers of the game "alan wake" (i posted wake related fan-art before) pointed out, that the main influence was that classic by david lynch and mark frost from the early 90's. thanks for that advice, remedy! hope you like.

after a long time of many sleepless nights, shifting and retouching fucking "ghosts" i finally finished the pages i wanted to showcase in berlin just in time... ladys and gentlemen, i proudly present the cover, the first 7 pages and the back of my 2D-3D project "flatlanders". i just returned from berlin yesterday, where our class showed their bookdummies to "25books", to make a long story short: awesome trip! met some great people with good suggestions and ideas for "flatlanders". now i have to finish some other projects for university and some jobs. maybe after that i'll go on with "flatlanders".
so, put on those red-cyan glasses again! hope you like :)

to wrap it up: first sketches i did. as you can see, stuff changed until it finally looked like in the above posted finished pages for the dummy...

don't panic! big update. after a long run of leaving "kopfstoff" uncared in the corner, i am finally back with some stuff to show. first of all i want to show you a newer version of my first mood sketch for "flatlanders", edited by the real king of 3-D art himself, ray zone (thanks a million for all your support!).

and it's time for another big "thank you". this time for you, cory godbey (creater and owner of an amazing page called "terrible yellow eyes"). on this page you can enjoy hours of watching collected art about my beloved max and the book "where the wild things are" from all over the world. finally i found my "i'll eat you up!" piece in the place to be ;). thank you, that's a major honour for me! i love your idea behind that project and it's really jaw dropping what it has truly become, respect!

i finished the first two pages of "flatlanders", my 3-D project for university. goal was to reduce the look of the first pages to a black and white, cartoonish looking, grey, cheerless, "dead" style to have a big break when the 3-D part finally kicks in. (this look will be totally different: colourful, wilder, more "three-dimensional" looking and at least in real 3-D ;))

right now, i am in a class called "book design", and we where free to choose a subject. i picked "3-D comic" and want to create a 4 or 5 pages dummy for the final presentation (4 pages and 1 cover maybe, depending on how "far" i can get). i am a big comic fan, bet you knew that - and i love the 3-D ones even more! but i had no idea how to start. so, i had to read up on that subject first...
i searched for some tutorials, to learn how i can put my paintings/ panels into 3-D. thereby i have had contact to great people and now i know the basic techniques (BIG THANKS goes out to BEETLEBUM and the real king of 3-D Comics RAY ZONE. they erased a lot of the question marks - thanks a million guys!)

this is just a little "mood"-sketch, to show you the "hero" and the idea behind it. sorry for the "raster", hope you've got red-cyan glasses ;)

this one is a sticker for children, let me introduce: "paul blink"... was a job for an optician. strange that i never showed agency jobs before... dunno why, maybe i'll catch up on some "older" stuff soon, or i'll just show some favs (otherwise it'll probably brake the mould ;)).

some postcards i did, for an energy saving campaign of the "department of environment". the red pig showing how to reduce waste of energy is the mascot of the "unser ener"-campaign...

last weekend my girlfriend and i visited "heilbronn" to see this artistic genius live on stage. the atmosphere was incredible... tons of sweat dropped from the ceiling while folks went totally crazy! one of the best musicians i've ever seen/ heard... back at home, i decided to draw another "dub fx piece", but this time more thoughtfulness. that's widescreen baby! hope you like :)

today a new episode of the awesome "mobile art" ebook by thierry schiel arrived, volume 2 is now available for free download on the appstore. you can get it if you click on the picture (itunes link). it has 198 pages of articles, reviews and beautiful paintings. featured artist for this edition is our so talented susan murtaugh!
beware - lots of art inside (me too ;)).

after a long time of being apstinence in the matter of "brushes", i finally had time to finish another piece. it's called "present from earth". in the distant future humanity managed to leave their own sun system to visit other stars and galaxys to spread - even in other dimensions. on this picture you see a little human girl representing planet earth, dropped on a new planet (you can see the mothership in the back), to hand over a present from the blue planet. a little galaxy as a tokan of friendship. hope you like ;)

to finish this ipod-update, here's a little sketch i did a few weeks ago. may i introduce the two sweetest cats on this planet: sasu (black) and finu (white)... a little bit rough and unfinished because they woke up and left without sympathie for the observer. (and yeees, sasu was sleeping in that position) hope you like it, next time i've got to be faster with that settle :)

big update... finally. finished the last 4 pages (page 9-12, well known sketchystyle), the cover, page 2 and concluded page 1 (added german dialog). on the whole i like the result but it could have been better - with more time, i had changed some things - maybe everything^^. deadline is over and now i've to wait for a mark from the professor... hope you like it :)

edit: just to complete it, here's a little description for you: i tried to capture a mood that fits to him - there's a reason for B/W (morally he's already dead - war and the mob-life ruined his humanly) , his look (he's forearmed and got a freezing icecold intend), and for the threatening clouds and red/purple skyline (not only the sun is going down, the big city also dies with him "onboard"!) ;)

i'm back with a new sketch... done with "brushes" on my ipod touch. it's for my girlfriend. she loves the game "the path" by "tale of tales" - robin is one of the girls, i liked her the most, so i choose her for a little fanart. hope you like it ;)

my first two sketches on the ipod touch, done with the free program "whiteboard: collaborative drawing", and my left forefinger... there aren't that many features (only a few colors, no zoom at all and just one brush)... and worst of all: with the freeversion you can't save. i needed a better tool.

last weekend i saw the new "x-men origins: wolverine" movie in cinema and was a bit disappointed. a lot of "bang, boom, crash" and... not more. they just did not tap the full potential. today i did a little logan-painting. just wanted to (s)c(r)atch that idea. it's wolverine, duuude. hope you like :)

today i had time to finish the second page for my comicversion of the book "die mittagsfrau" written by julia franck.... i have to correct myself... time to finish a sketch for page 2 -.-
it's the first time for me EVER doin' panels - i tried to create some kind of "reading flow" ?! hope you like.

edit: sketches for page 3 and 4 are finished... 4 more pages and i'm done.

edit 2: next pages (5 and 6) as a really ruff "sketchversion" and a second "censored version". my professor didn't like the first sketch for that scene - i was forced to illustrate another situation - i guess he didn't liked the "splatter" of that "handscene". he has not yet seen the second "censored version" - maybe now it's ok...

edit 3: next sketches (for the pages 7 and 8) are done. page 6 can remain this "censored" way. now i have to do 2 more pages (i haven't got any plans for going on...) - my professor wants to know what's next! (to be honest, me2 ;))

yesterday i bought the first 2 german issues of "the goon" (by eric powell) and read it in no time at all (with more than just a big grin on my face) - it's simply fantastic! can't wait for the next episode... to shorten the long wait i did a little sketch of the two heros. yeah, i know not that creative, original idea and the paper is dirty and fucked up like hell, but that's just what my left hand wanted to draw i guess ;) hope you like.

the new semester just started and i already miss all that freetime!
i scanned some (almost forgotten) sketches i found yesterday from 1999 to 2007 . for me it's nice to have that nearly forgotten "real pen&paper stuff" finally on screen... there are sketches from professors, fellow students (nearly 2 years old), very old stuff from 99, 00 and 02, some stuff from my portfolio from 06 (the hand, the uterus, the chicken and the sprayer) and other things i recovered from an old blackbook. i hadn't got a scanner back in the days... hope you like ;)

i'm back with a new picture for the upcoming 4th issue of the JAZAM!, topic is "monster"... i've chosen max because i still love the original book called "where the wild things are"/ "wo die wilden kerle wohnen" by maurice sendak as much as i was a little boy and that topic came to my mind after i thought about monsters. it will be released in greyscale, so no need for me to fix the white light-outline which should be red in the color-version ;) - i'm very proud to get a page in that great magazine, which helps unknown fledgling artists to be known! big thanks to the whole JAZAM!-team :)

edit: some copyright-questions need to be answered first before it could be released as a printed page in that "fanzine"... CROSS YOUR FINGERS!

edit2: i got an answer via mail: no release for comercial use :( maybe i can finish another picture just in time for that great "fanzine". *sigh*

finally i got time for a little artwork just for me, myself and i... ;) the joker, baby! got some problems saving the image as a jpg-file for web. now the picture looks weird in ps, bridge and the standard-windows-viewer but normal in paint, irfanview and firefox (i dont use the hidden firefox color management...) fucked up shit like that sucks, duude! but happy in the end i guess ;)

just a coupla "teaser-pics" from my prediploma... i did it in 2 weeks. it was a arranged mark for photography, typography and illustration - 3 prof's gave me one mark for that... it's a "real book" with 35 pages full of art, the guy from "alone in the dark" (i was playing the game at the very time and liked him :D) plus a thrilling "movielike" story with twists and turns ;)
